Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification
The month of July 2023 was dry with cloudy and cool weather conditions. Following early cessation of the long rains, vegetation quality is deteriorating. Maize crops is wilting and water stressed in several parts of the Agro Pastoral livelihood zone. The county is currently classified in Normal drought phase with a deteriorating trend. The long rains 2023 food and nutrition preliminary findings indicated that 104,400 persons do require humanitarian assistance in Samburu County.
Biophysical Indicators
• Forage condition is deteriorating both in quality and quantity across the livelihood zone. Open water sources are drying in Pastoral livelihood and diminishing lower parts of Agro Pastoral livelihood zone. Distances trekked increased compared to last month although remained within the expected normal ranges.
Socio Economic Indicators Details
• Body condition for livestock remained good to fair for all species. Milk production and consumption were below the long-term average The improvement in livestock body condition has supported favorable livestock market prices.
However, for food commodities are extremely unfavorable resulting in erosion in household purchasing power.
• Current prevalence of children below five years old at risk of malnutrition was critical and extremely above the recommended thresholds.
