Biophysical Indicators

  • The weather conditions remained generally dry, cool and cloudy over the highlands of the county. According to Kenya Meteorology Department outlook indicates that maximum (day-‐time) temperatures are likely to be as low as 21oC in Maralal and minimum (night-‐time) temperatures are expected to go down to 14oC in Maralal in the next seven days(2nd – 8 th August 2022 forecast). The rangeland conditions remained poor with depleted pastures.

  • Most surface water points remained dry with high proportion of households relying on hand dung traditional river wells and boreholes for water.

Socio Economic Indicators Details

  • The body condition larger proportion of cattle remained with sharp and visible bone structure of shoulder, ribs, back, hooks and pins.

  • Food commodities prices are on arise since March 2022 currently being the highest due to scarcity of cereals and increased inflation rates. Livestock prices are on decreasing trends. Household and livestock walking distances to water points remained above the seasonal average.

  • Prevalence of children at risk of malnutrition based on family MUAC remained above the recommended thresholds.
