Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification
The county has experienced the longest and severe drought with rising daytime temperatures. Scarce rangeland resources resulted in increased spikes in conflicts between communities.
Livestock have been grazing away from homesteads due to depleted rangelands driven by drought.
The county remained in Alarm drought phase classification.
The 2022 short rains assessment indicated that about 156,700 persons are food insecure (IPC Phase 3 and above).
Biophysical Indicators
• Sunny and dry weather conditions prevailed throughout the month of February 2023. Surface water sources have dried up in most parts of the county. Trekking distances for livestock and households increased. Livestock body conditions was generally poor across the livelihood zones for all species. Consequently, this has resulted in very low livestock productivity.
Socio Economic Indicators Details
• Maize and other cereal prices have maintained an upward trend surpassing the normal range.
• Market and farmgate prices for livestock remained below the average. The household purchasing power has further eroded to very low levels limiting food access at the markets.
• Prevalence of children at risk of malnutrition based on MUAC remained above the recommended thresholds.
