Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

  • The March-April-May (MAM) rains are yet to begin in both Kieni East and Kieni West sub counties. The rains were expected to start in the third week of March.

  • Pasture condition deteriorated during the month under review compared to the previous month. The situation is poor across the livelihood except for some localised areas in the upper zones in mixed farming livelihood zones that registered fair condition.

  • Access to water had deteriorated during the month of March compared to the previous month. Most of the open water sources have dried up. Rivers are flowing below normal levels. Water rationing by major water projects has intensified.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

Production Indicators

  • Land preparation and planting was on-going in readiness for the MarchApril-May rainy season.

    Livestock body condition ranged from poor to fair for all species.

  • Milk production remained same as was reported last month.

  • In migration of livestock from the neighbouring counties was reported.

Access indicators

  • Milk consumption was within the normal threshold

  • Distances to water sources has increased from 1.9 in February to 2.6 in March

Utilization Indicators

  • No children were at risk of malnutrition during the month under review.

  • Coping strategy Index was above the normal threshold.
