Moyale tensions still high as KRCS continues to respond

Tension is still evident in Moyale following the Gabra- Borana conflict over political positions and new boundaries as enacted in the New constitution. Some of the displaced families have moved into Ethiopia and Wajir District and as a result, a team from Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) is currently carrying out a detailed assessment in Bute, Gurar and Dasir to determine the number of people displaced so that the Society can assist. According to the elders from both sides, some 300 families have been displaced and are currently in Wajir.

Meanwhile, KRCS continues to distribute non- food items in to the displaced families in Moyale. The Society has also set up a medical outreach to serve both communities since health facilities were burnt down as a result of the conflict and medicine looted from the existing facilities. KRCS also plans to do water trucking for the displaced people and for the Moyale District hospital, which is currently overwhelmed. the humanitarian situation is still dire and the families need support in health, water, education, food and non-food items. at least 100MT food has been dispatched from the Headquarters and distribution will commence tomorrow.
