Situation overview
- The district received high quantity of rainfall over the month. The quantity for the month is 187mm. Between 27th April and 29th April 2010 the total amount over this period was 107mm. These rains destroyed all the roads in the District and swept away whatever crops that were standing. Several houses were also destroyed and some valley settlements abandoned as a result of floods.
- Water and forage available is quite high and livestock have to be moved to the hills away from flooded lowlands. Some species like goats are experiencing problem as a result of floods and predators.
- Conditions of all species of livestock are extremely good. There are no outbreaks of any disease and livestock productivity has improved, reducing the price of milk to less than Ksh18.70.
- There is an outbreak of mosquitoes all over the two districts. Places on the hills were existence of mosquitoes were not known before are presently infested by swarms of this insects. The situation has increased incidence of malaria.
- Prices of foodstuffs have risen as a result of impassable roads as goods do not reach the area. Traders have hiked their prices and some are hoarding goods like sugar and other essential commodities.
- The District status might slightly improve over the next two or three months as pastures are abundant and food crops can be harvested in some location like Mado Adhi, Wayegodha, Somare, Uran, Golole, Heilu and Butiye. Areas like Bori, Godoma, Mansille have been destroyed by floods.
- Livestock prices also improved especially in goats and camels. Average goats prices while camels sale for as much as Ksh70,000.
