Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

  • There was some rain received in different parts of the County during the Second and third dekad of October. The rains received were however poor in both temporal and spatial distribution. Banisa Sub County received significant amount of rainfall during the month under review.
  • Vegetation condition; the Vegetation Condition index for the month of October was 32.99 categorizing the County as moderate vegetation deficit band.
  • Field Observation shows that the pasture conditions are depleted in all the sub counties though regeneration of browse was noted in Banisa sub County.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • Production indicators; Milk production and consumption are below long term average.

  • Livestock deaths especially cattle due to nutritional deficiency were reported in Mandera South sub county during the month under review.

  • Term of trade is below long-term average making unfavourable to pastoral communities

  • There are over eighty centres under trucking conducted by county government.

  • The utilization indicator is outside the normal range
