Biophysical Indicators

  • Light showers were received in some parts of the County during the month of March

  • The 3-month Vegetation Condition index for the County was 9.85 indicating extreme drought .Four sub counties are already under extreme drought namely Mandera South, Banisa, North and West with 8.46, 9.5, 8.77 and 9.92 respectively while the remaining two sub counties are at severe drought.

  • Most of the surface water sources had dried up and congestion had been witnessed in all livestock strategic boreholes.

  • All the biophysical indicators were outside the expected normal range.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • Three of the production indicators are outside the expected normal ranges. The access indicators were also fluctuating outside the normal ranges. Milk production and consumption are below the long term averages.

  • Pasture is depleted in most parts of the County. The body condition of livestock is fair except cattle whose condition was poor. The prices of livestock had decreased due to the deteriorating body condition.

  • The utilization indicators remained within normal ranges. However, malnutrition rates were on increase.
