Biophysical Indicators

Rainfall Performance: Laikipia North and Laikipia East sub counties received below 25 percent of the normal rains while Laikipia West sub county received 26-50 percent of the normal rains in the month of June.

Vegetation Condition: The 3-month vegetation condition index was above normal across all the livelihood zones. Conditioned Drought Indicator: The CDI indicated that the situation was normal.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

Production Indicators: Farmers were harvesting beans and potatoes; the realised yields were fair. Maize is in good condition and projected yield is above average. Livestock body condition is good and milk production is above average. Migration of livestock was normal. The tropical livestock unit is below normal in pastoral livelihood zones. Foot and Mouth Disease was the main endemic disease affecting livestock in the County.

Access indicators: The terms of trade were above normal and favourable to livestock keepers, as they were able to purchase a significant kilogram of maize from a sale of livestock. Milk consumption was within the normal ranges. Household and livestock watering distances are below LTA and within normal ranges. Most open water sources are still holding sufficient amounts.

Utilization indicators: Household’s food consumption score is at acceptable across all the livelihood zones. The nutrition status falls within the acceptable ranges. Households reduced the application of the consumption based coping mechanisms. The percent of children at risk of malnutrition dropped in the month of June compared to the previous month.
