Provinces in the eastern part of Kenya have recently experienced the heaviest rainfall in four decades, leaving nearly 300,000 people in need of immediate assistance. The Kenyan government launched an international appeal last week seeking food, drinking water, temporary shelter, fuel and medicine for the flood victims. The UN Disaster Management Team is working in close cooperation with the Kenyan government's National Disaster Committee to support coordination of international relief efforts. UNDP will provide logistical support and fuel for flights bringing relief materials to the areas hardest hit by the floods. UNDP will also help mobilize more resources for flood victims. UNDP and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization will provide seeds to meet the longer term needs of the affected communities.
