VITAL TRENDS

  • ACLED records 98 political violence events and at least 70 reported fatalities from 3 to 30 June 2023. Al-Shabaab activity accounts for over 17% of all recorded political violence events in Kenya during this period.

  • Garissa county had the highest number of reported fatalities, with at least 14 recorded during the reporting period. Mandera and Lamu counties followed, with at least eight and seven, respectively. Al-Shabaab activity contributed to nearly half the reported fatalities.

  • The most common event type was riots, with 63 events, followed by protests, with 53 events. Vigilante groups were involved in over half the riot events in Kenya during the reporting period.
