Kenya Red Cross Society donates to flood displaced families

Reporting Monday 31 December 2012

Following displacement of families in different parts of the country, the Kenya Red cross Society (KRCS) is in the process of distributing both food and non- food items to most of the displaced or affected families.

In Kerio South, KRCS Uasin Gishu Branch and North Rift Regional office assisted in the evacuation of over 70 HH who were at risk, following a previous mudslide in the area. The displaced families are currently camping at three centers namely, Cherorget Primary School, Tripolongon Primary School and Sego Church. With assistance from the Provincial Administration and the Flospor Company in the area, KRCS has managed to distribute items to the displaced families. Most aspiring politicians have also been of great assistance in the rescue efforts. So far, 13 bodies have been retrieved and three are still missing, including a mother and a child.

In the West Kenya Region, both River Nyando and River Sondu broke their banks thus displacing several families and causing damage to infrastructure and property. The KRCS Nyando Branch and the Regional office carried out an assessment that indicated situation of the affected families as follows: Rangul Location 17 households(HH), Agoro West 6 households, Asao 8 households, Kabodho West 15 households, North Nyakach 13 households, Ombeyi 85 households and a total of 32 households displaced and camping in several centers where KRCS has distributed blankets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets and water chemicals among other things. More updates to follow.
