Kenya: Kofi Annan arrival to Nairobi

Kofi A. Annan, Graça Machel and Benjamin Mkapa, the Panel of Prominent African Personalities mandated by President Kufour of Ghana, the current President of the African Union, to mediate between concerned parties in the disputed outcome of the recent Presidential election in Kenya, will begin to assemble in Nairobi on Tuesday, 15 January 2008.

Speaking before his departure, Mr Annan appealed for calm, "The purpose of our mission is to help the Kenyan people find a peaceful and just solution to the current crisis".  "We expect all people to work hard to find a solution.  Pending this, no party should create facts on the ground or engage in acts that complicate the search for a negotiated solution. The interests of the nation and the people must be paramount." said Mr Annan.

Kofi A. Annan is the Chair of the Panel of Prominent African Personalities.
