Kenya: Heavy Rains and Flooding Update - Flash Update #3 (29 April 2024)

HIGHLIGHTS

• Heavy rains and flash floods have left more than 103 people dead, 29 injured, 21 people missing, 150,365 people (30,073 families) displaced and nearly 191,000 affected across the country as of 28 April, according to the National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC).

• On 29 April, 45 people lost their lives and 109 were rescued in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County, after a tunnel filled with debris and water succumbed to pressure due to heavy rains.

• As of 24 April, over 4,824 livestock have been lost, 27,717 acres of croplands damaged, 264 small businesses and 24 schools affected.

• Major flash floods have occurred in Nairobi, Makueni, West Pokot and Machakos Counties resulting in loss of lives, properties and disruption of services.

• Main roads have also been cut-off including the Garissa-Nairobi Road and the Dadaab-Garissa Road.

• Schools reopening is postponed from 29 April to 6 May.

• Humanitarian partners are supporting the Government-led response to scale up relief efforts for the affected population.

SITUATION OVERVIEW

Heavy rains and flash floods have left more than 103 people dead, 29 injured, 21 people missing, 150,365 people (30,073 families) displaced and more than 190,937 affected all the 47 counties as of 28 April, according to the National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC). On 28 April, a boat carrying 43 passengers capsized in the Madogo-Kona Punda section of Nairobi-Garissa Road which was flooded. Some 23 people were rescued, 7 people died and 13 are still missing. On 29 April, 45 people lost their lives and 109 were rescued after a tunnel filled with debris and water succumbed to pressure due to continued rains in old Kijabe Town. This led to the destruction of homes in Kamuchiri Village, Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County.

As of 24 April, over 4,824 livestock have been lost, 27,717 acres of croplands damaged, 264 small businesses and 24 schools affected. Schools reopening has been postponed from 29 April to 6 May. Main roads have also been cut off including the Garissa-Nairobi Road and the Dadaab-Garissa Road. As of 27 April, all dams under the seven forks dams - which include Masinga, Kaburu, Gitaru, Kindaruma and Kiambere - are now at total capacity, amid concerns of a massive overflow downstream within the next 24 hours.
