MARALAL [ACTED News] – More than 80,000 people have been affected by flooding during the past two weeks in western, northern, and north-eastern Kenya according to various assessments conducted by the Government of Kenya, UN agencies, the Kenyan Red Cross and NGOs. Critical needs for flood-affected populations include safe water and sanitation, as people’s health is put at risk through use of contaminated water sources and poor sanitation practices and facilities. ACTED is currently undertaking activities in Samburu County and Wajir District that promote improved hygiene practices and is distributing hygiene kits enabling beneficiaries to safely transport, store, and treat their drinking water. These interventions are providing communities in these areas with improved access to safe water, therefore mitigating the risk of the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera.
