Kenya - Floods (DG ECHO, media, Kenya Meteorological Department) (ECHO Daily Flash of 23 April 2025)

  • Heavy rainfall has been affecting central and western Kenya (mainly the Isiolo and Baringo counties) over the past few days, causing rivers to overflow (particularly the Majimoto river), floods, and flash floods that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Media report, as of 23 April, two missing people, one rescued person and approximately 200 displaced families across Isiolo county. In addition, a number of structures have been damaged across Baringo county.
  • Rains and floods are particularly alerting in current epidemics environment as a cholera outbreak is ongoing in the country, with four counties reporting cases (128 cases with five deaths – Case Fatality Rate 5,2%), including Nairobi, while sanitation and clean water availability in the poorest neighbourhoods is deficient.
  • Over the next 48 hours, more heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is still forecast over most of the country.
