Kenya: Floods 2012 DREF operation n° MDRKE024 Final Report


Summary: CHF 277,616 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the National Society in delivering assistance to approximately 12,936 beneficiaries and to replenish disaster preparedness stocks.

The December-January-February (DJF) rain season caused heavy flooding in Western Kenya and mudslides were experienced in the Rift Valley regions affecting more than 6,985 households. A total of 17 deaths related to the floods (4) and mudslides (13) were reported.

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) in close collaboration with the Government of Kenya, international and national non-governmental agencies and local communities, supported by IFRC, responded to the aftereffects of the floods and mudslides with provision of relief supplies to the vulnerable population. Services that the vulnerable population received included search and rescue services, psychosocial support, food, Non-Food Items and WASH interventions.

All activities planned under this operation have been carried out and a total of CHF 8,667 that was unspent at the close of the operation has been returned to DREF.

The Canadian Red Cross/ Canadian government, Netherlands Red Cross/ Netherlands government as well as funds from the IFRC Tsunami Residual Funds contributed to the replenishment of the DREF allocation made for this operation. The major donors and partners of DREF include the Australian,
