Kenya Red Cross, Safaricom Foundation and Vodafone Foundation have commissioned 120 houses constructed for the internally displaced persons in the North Rift Region.
The commissioning of the houses, worth Ksh18m, on Tuesday, 18th November 2008, was attended by representatives of the Safaricom and Vodafone Foundations who are funding the construction of houses, school dormitories and a chief's camp in the region.
During the event, 19 houses were handed over to beneficiaries in Sugoi area as well as a Chief's camp. Another facility reconstructed through the support of the foundations was a dormitory in Sugoi Girls School.
Present during the function was the Minister for Agriculture, Hon. William Ruto, the Governor of the Kenya Red Cross, Mr. Paul Birech, representatives of Safaricom and Vodafone Foundations, as well as a host of Kenya Red Cross officers.
Hon. Ruto commended the Kenya Red Cross and both Foundations for supporting the people affected by the post election violence and other disasters in the North Rift Region.
The 12-months project by Safaricom and Vodafone is set to benefit close to 70,000 IDP families.
