Dadaab Refugee Camp, Kenya
KEY MESSAGES
- The average household (HH) income was 5,263 KES, slightly higher than the average HH expenditure (3,977 KES). However, the comparatively high debt levels of 9,217 KES, suggests that HHs lacked access to basic needs. Notably, 86% of HHs reported food as the most unfulfilled need. This implies, without any form of cash assistance, these HHs are likely to incur more debt and limit their economic well-being to access essential basic needs.
- At the time of the baseline assessment, over a third (37%) of HHs were found to have a poor food consumption score (FCS). A similar proportion, were found have a borderline FCS, suggesting limited dietary diversity and inadequate access to food.
- Close to three-quarters (74%) of HHs were found to be engaging in either emergency, crisis or stress coping strategies. HHs are likely to exhaust their limited resources to afford basic needs which undermine their overall resilience. This also implies that these HHs are likely to see a deterioration in food consumption.
