Isiolo County has had sporadic conflict between the Samburu and Turkana communities in the villages of Attan, Lowangila, Arimet and its environs in Burat ward of Isiolo Sub County .On Saturday, 6th June 2015, an early morning attack occurred at Attan (Isiolo County) that left a number of residents dead and injured.
Introduction

Isiolo County has had sporadic conflict between the Samburu and Turkana communities in the villages of Attan, Lowangila, Arimet and its environs in Burat ward of Isiolo Sub County .On Saturday, 6th June 2015, an early morning attack occurred at Attan (Isiolo County) that left a number of residents dead and injured. The aftermath of these recurrent conflicts resulted into mass displacements of the area inhabitants from their homes for fear of counter attacks. The areas affected were Attan, Lowangila, Ngaremara, Arimet, Longopito, Tualle and Kipsing.

Situation Overview

Majority of the displaced families moved back to their homes after security had been restored. However, since 6th June 2015 to date, there are other families still camping at Kipsing GSU camp without much support. KRCS Isiolo Branch team conducted an assessment in the area on 8th June 2015, where 68 families were found to be displaced and camping at the GSU camp with a total estimate of 160 people. The displaced are spending in the cold without food and protective items from disease exposure like Malaria. Also the displaced population is in the midst of the warring communities they are fleeing from and were strongly requesting for relocation to Isiolo central.

Interventions required

  1. Immediate humanitarian aid to safe lives (Food Aid, Non Food Items, medication, water provision, Nutrition screening for the children below five years.

  2. Psychosocial support as some families are traumatized

  3. Relocation of the population for safety.

KRCS Action

  1. The assessment report was shared with the relevant institutions

  2. A planning committee chaired by the deputy Governor (KRCS Isiolo branch member) was constituted by the Governor to map way forward.

  3. KRCS Requested the office of the Governor to provide food and nonfood support as the planning by the committees will be underway.

Conclusion

Close monitoring is ongoing in regards to the situation progress by the KRCS team.
