Biophysical Indicators

  • The month of September was characterized by hot weather with relatively strong winds. There was continuous sunny weather during the day and mild rainfall onset indications.

  • The 3-Month Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) increased slightly maintaining an above normal vegetation condition.

  • Pasture and browse availability was good in the pastoral and agro-pastoral livelihood zones.

  • Water availability in all sources was good following a significant recharge during the long rains season. Water levels in rivers and water pans dropped significantly.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

Production Indicators

  • Livestock body condition for all species was good in all livelihood zones.

  • Milk production was low compared to the previous month.

  • Crop yields, cereals and legumes, were good as more supply was realized in the markets. Vegetables under small-scale irrigated systems were doing well.

Access Indicators

  • Livestock prices improved during the month while food commodities prices stabilized.

  • Household milk consumption reduced slightly over the period under review.

Utilization Indicators

  • Malnutrition levels among children under five year’s reduced slightly showing improvement in the overall nutrition status.
