PeaceNet - Kenya, launched an 'Election Violence Reduction project' on Monday, 12th November 2007 in Nairobi, at a PeaceNet Regional Coordinator's consultative meeting.
This is the fifth edition in a series of weekly updates that is informing partners of unfolding events during the elections and mobilizing stakeholders for interventions.
Red Flag
- The prevailing unrest in Kuresoi and Mt. Elgon accelerated by the political situation leading to over 50 deaths and a multitude of internally displaced persons in the last two months.
- Hate speech, threats and intimidations being witnessed in campaign rallies across the board.
- Intensity and acceleration of violence targeting women candidates and supporters is a major concern.
Central
- Supporters of Mr. Kuguru (Dynamic Development Party) and Mr. Nderitu Gachagua (PNU), parliamentary candidates for Mathira constituency clashed on 10th and 11th December 2007 at Unjiru shopping center, Ichuga and at Kiaritha-ini respectively.
- Derogatory text messages targeting the Safina party parliamentary candidate, Eng. Maina of Mathira constituency, depicting him as a devil worshipper are being circulated in the area.
