PeaceNet - Kenya, launched an 'Election Violence Reduction project on Monday, 12th November 2007 in Nairobi, at a PeaceNet Regional Coordinator's consultative meeting. The purpose of publication is to monitor violence and mobilize stakeholders for interventions.

This is the second edition in a series of weekly updates that will inform partners of unfolding events during the elections.

Red Flag

- The violence that was witnessed during party civic and parliamentary nominations and issuance of certificates due to irregularities in the different political camps, could trigger tension and escalate violence during this campaign period.

- The Circulation of a purported MOU between ODM and Muslims is causing inter-religious tension between Christians and Muslims particularly in Mombasa.

Nyanza

- ODM supporters protested the irregular issuance of certificates to loser of the civic and parliamentary nominations in Nyakatch,Rangwe,Ugenya,Nyatike and Kuria constituencies.Protesters lit bonfires along Busia - Kisumu highway after cancellation of Steve Mwanga's nomination results.

- The Presiding office, Fr. Omolo in Ugenya ODM polling station was beaten and injured by irate members. Whilst in Bonchari constituency the returning officer was held hostage for several hours after claims that he had dropped an aspirants name from the final list. Their Usonga counter part was abducted but later rescued in what s claimed to be a political motivated action.
