Humanitarian situation and needs

Key messages

  • While the situation has improved in 2012 due to good rainfall and substantial aid, 1.1 million Kenyans are currently still in need of humanitarian assistance;

  • The humanitarian situation in Dadaab refugee camp, the biggest in the world, has been stable, with some gaps in shelter, protection, nutrition and food security. The security situation remains volatile and a constant threat to the protection of refugees and delivery of humanitarian assistance;

  • In Kakuma, lately the situation has deteriorated with a new influx of Sudanese refugees to an already saturated camp where water is scarce;

  • The overall situation in the country remains fragile and requires constant vigilance. The Government of Kenya is actively pushing for the repatriation of Somali refugees and has called for a Conference on Repatriation for August 2013.
