Fighting Cholera in Marsabit County: How Food for the Hungry is Protecting Families
In Marsabit County, Kenya, cholera poses a serious threat to families living in remote communities. The outbreak risk increases in areas with limited access to clean water and healthcare. Food for the Hungry has been on the ground, responding to this urgent need by providing critical health education and clean water solutions to protect these vulnerable communities.
Delivering Life-Saving Hygiene Messaging
One of the most effective ways to prevent cholera is through education. We launched a community-wide hygiene promotion campaign that reached 1,976 households in the North Horr and Moyale sub-counties. Through local gatherings known as “barazas” and interactive radio shows, we shared crucial information on cholera prevention, hygiene practices, and the importance of water safety. These efforts were carried out in close collaboration with the county public health department and community health officers.
By leveraging local leadership and radio broadcasts, our hygiene messaging ensured families were equipped with the knowledge needed to protect themselves and their loved ones.

To further reduce the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases, we distributed water treatment solutions to the same 1,976 households. In total, we reached 51 communities in Marsabit County, ensuring that each family had the tools to purify their water and safeguard their health. This initiative will have a lasting impact, as families are now empowered to take daily steps toward clean, safe water.
