Orphaned and disabled children developed their skills and self-esteem in a special Islamic Relief event, which was held in cooperation with youth group Basmat Al-Hayat.
Around 40 orphaned children sponsored by Islamic Relief and 25 blind children from Baqa’a refugee camp gathered to share and develop their skills – and have fun – at Amman shopping mall.
The children got a taste of working in retail and catering as part of the initiative in February, with each child receiving a coupon to spend at the mall.
“I have learned how to rely on myself”
Haneen, 15, who is supported by Islamic Relief’s orphan sponsorship scheme, took part.
“I have learned how to rely on myself,” she said, describing her experience at the special event. “I felt integrated into the society we are living in. I am dignified.”
The children also enjoyed a variety of activities such as face painting, games, and a writing competition. Orphaned children paired up with a blind child to help them throughout the activities.
Malak, 14, said: “I am taking care of seven-year old Amineh. I am happy [to be] helping her. I am lucky, my eyes are sound.”
The event sought to help the children to develop their skills and self-reliance, boost their esteem, and encourage teamwork and social justice.
