A wildfire in the Akasakicho area in the city of Ofunato in northern Japan has caused casualties and damage. According to the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), at least 634 hectares have been burnt in this area so far.
As of 28 February, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) reports one fatality, 3,306 people under evacuation orders, and at least 84 damaged houses. According to media, at least 540 people have been displaced in seven shelters in Ofunato city, and power outages affected 490 households.
Over the next 48 hours, according to GWIS, the fire danger forecast is low in the affected area.
