A huge explosive eruption occurred at Shinmoedake Volcano, part of the Kirishima Volcanic Complex, southern Kyushu Island, Japan on 3 July at 6.37 UTC. The ash plume reached a height of 6.7 km above sea level.
The eruption generated significant ashfall, affecting the prefectures of Miyazaki and Kagoshima. Local authorities issued advisories urging residents to remain indoors due to hazardous conditions.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the volcano’s alert level was elevated from 2 to 3, restricting access to areas near the volcano. This includes Kobayashi City, Takaharu Town, and Kirishima City in the Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures.
In addition, Akusekijima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture has experienced over 1,000 earthquakes since 21 June, resulting in the evacuation of approximately 90 residents living on the island
