Japan - Earthquake (GDACS, USGS, JMA, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 14 January 2025)

  • A 6.8 M earthquake (6.9 M as recorded by the Japan Meteorological Agency - JMA) at a depth of 36 km occurred offshore 10 km east of the eastern coast of Miyazaki prefecture, Kyushu island, southern Japan on 13 January at 12.19 UTC (21.19 local time). The epicentre was located approximately 18 km south-east of Miyazaki city and 45 km north-east of Miyakonojo city.
  • Following this seismic event, a small tsunami has been recorded over the eastern coast of Miyazaki prefecture, one of 20 cm across Miyazakiko and another of 20 cm Nicinanshi Aburatsu as registered by the JMA.
  • US PAGER estimates that up to 407,000 people were exposed to strong shaking.
  • According to media, one person was slightly injured in Kyushu while some trains have been stopped, and a prefecture road has been blocked.
