In response to the Great East Japan Earthquake, on Thursday, May 5 (local time), the Government of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay provided relief donation of 500,000 US dollars (approximately 40 million yen) to the Japanese Red Cross Society.
Uruguay has already sent to Japan 4,600 cans (approximately 2 tons) of corned beef as relief supplies. Furthermore, H.E. Mr. José Mujica Cordano, President of Uruguay, H.E. Mr. Alberto Breccia, Presidential Secretary of Uruguay, and H.E. Mr. Luis Rosadilla, Defense Minister of Uruguay, visited the Embassy of Japan in Uruguay to sign the condolence book. Many words of sympathy have been expressed to Japan by H.E. Mr. Luis Almagro Lemes, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, and the people of Uruguay.
