In the wake of the recent Great East Japan Earthquake, the Government of Japan has decided to accept medical assistance teams from Jordan and Thailand to be based at Fukushima Medical University.
From Jordan, a medical assistance team of four members, consisting of two vascular surgeons and two ultrasound technologists, is scheduled for dispatch to Japan on Monday, April 25. This team will visit evacuation centers together with doctors from Fukushima Medical University and will examine disaster victims using ultrasonography to check for blood vessel abnormalities such as blood clots, etc as well as give advice on how to reduce the incidence of economy-class syndrome. The duration of these activities has been tentatively set as three weeks.
From Thailand, a medical assistance team of two members, consisting of one doctor and one nurse, is scheduled for dispatch to the sites in Japan on Monday, May 9. This team will also visit evacuation centers together with doctors from Fukushima Medical University and will carry out relief activities to help disaster victims, with a particular focus on preventing infectious diseases among children. At present, the Thailand side is in the process of selecting the doctor and nurse for dispatch, and it is expected that either a doctor or a nurse is able to speak Japanese. The period of these activities has been set at two weeks. After that, the dispatch of a replacement team is planned.
