Food and Nutrition Assistance

  • As of 8 January 2026, WFP has completed distributions of approximately 98,000 food kits, equating to nearly 6 million meals for individuals impacted by Hurricane Melissa across St. Elizabeth, St. James, Trelawny, and Westmoreland. This operation reached 130,000 unique beneficiaries and marks the conclusion of WFP’s in-kind food assistance, marking a full transition to cash-based assistance.
  • WFP’s cash assistance programme launched on 18 December 2025 in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and is progressing steadily. A total of 10,047 people have benefitted from the cash programme.
  • WFP’s Community Feedback Mechanism (CFM) remains a vital accountability tool for communities impacted by Hurricane Melissa, enabling information access and issue reporting. Since cash assistance began, of the 846 calls received, 67% of callers have been women, indicating higher female engagement. Call volumes peaked on December 31, before slightly declining in early January. The highest volume of requests were for information about the programme (66%), while complaints were minimal, showing beneficiaries primarily sought clarity on assistance schedules and entitlements. This trend underscores strong reliance on official channels over informal sources for accurate programme details.

Supply Chain and Emergency Telecommunication

  • Two months after Hurricane Melissa, WFP continues to provide free Common Service transport and storage support to partners. To date, 35 storage requests and 168 transport requests have been completed, equivalent to a total of 1,479 MT of relief items. WASH represents the largest share of stored goods (55%), while Health leads transported items (45%), followed by Food and Shelter— ensuring critical supplies reach affected communities across Jamaica. The Government of Jamaica has utilized the system in recent weeks as part of reconstruction efforts for homes in severely damaged parishes.
  • As of 22 December 2025, WFP concluded Emergency Telecommunications support in Jamaica. During the response, WFP - in collaboration with the Emergency Telecommunications Sector (ETS) - delivered connectivity at 65+ critical sites—hospitals, shelters, government offices—using Wi-Fi, mobile hotspots, and Starlink satellite solutions to bridge gaps in hardest-hit parishes.
