Between 1 January and 30 September 2020, 23,726 refugees and migrants arrived in Italy by sea. This represents an increase compared to the same period last year, when 7,633 sea arrivals were recorded at landing points in southern Italy. However, sea arrivals numbers in 2020 so far are comparable to or lower than in similar periods in recent years (e.g. 21,024 sea arrivals in January-September 2018; 105,418 sea arrivals in January-September 2017). In September 2020, 4,387 refugees and migrants reached Italian shores, down from 5,326 who disembarked in Italy in August 2020. Notably, over half of September 2020 sea arrivals (2,270 persons) disembarked in Lampedusa.
