Italian Earthquake: Information Bulletin 2

The Situation:

After the strong earthquake on 6 April, the city of L'Aquila in central Italy area has been hit by many after-stocks. The strongest measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale occurred on the 7 April. According to the latest figure from the public authority, at least 289 people have been killed and 1,000 injured. An estimated 28,000 people become homeless.

The immediate needs such as shelter, food, medical care, psychosocial support are currently all being met. The operation is now entering into a recovery and rehabilitation phase.

Red Cross Action:

The International Red Cross has mobilized approximately HK$5 million to support Italian Red Cross (ItRC) in delivering immediate assistance to 15,000 affected people.

The ItRC has already set up 5 camps in the affected areas, providing 4,500 beds. 2,000 more blankets have also been distributed.

6 medical teams and 10 volunteer psychologists are now operational in providing medical assistance and psychosocial support.

5 mobile kitchens are now operational in serving 22,000 meals a day to the needy.

More than 600 volunteers are assisting with rescue, medical, food, shelter and water supply operation.

No international appeal has been launched for this relief operation.

Hong Kong Red Cross Action:

The Hong Kong Red Cross is in close coordination with the International Red Cross to monitor needs.
