UN condemns Israeli army action targeting schools in Gaza Strip

Gaza (dpa) - United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Commissioner-General Peter Hansen on Sunday condemned Israeli military actions targeting UNRWA schools and its pupils in the Gaza Strip.

Hansen paid a visit to Shiffa Hospital in Gaza City where Huda Darweesh, 11 years old was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit as clinically dead. She was shot Saturday at her school in the Khan Younis refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip.

Somaya Darweesh said her daughter was sitting on her desk in her classroom at one of UNRWA's primary schools in the camp when Israeli soldiers opened fire on the school on Saturday.

''My daughter was not throwing stones, and didn't fire a mortar shell at the Israelis. She was just sitting at her classroom when she was shot in her head. Allah (God) will revenge from the Jews,'' said Darweesh.

Hansen said UNRWA condemned the targeting of its educational and medical institutions, particularly when one of its primary schools had been attacked and one its pupils critically wounded.

He said that he would report the incident to United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.
