Israel: FM Shalom meets with British Foreign Secretary Straw

Foreign Minister Shalom said that Hamas should remain on the European Union's list of terrorist organizations.

(Communicated by the Foreign Minister's Bureau)

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom met today (June 7, 2005) in Jerusalem with British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw.

At the beginning of their meeting, Foreign Secretary Straw said that Hamas is a terror organization and that Britain will have no dealings with its leaders unless they "wholly renounce violence and renounce their charter calling for the destruction of the State of Israel."

Foreign Minister Shalom said that Hamas should remain on the European Union's list of terrorist organizations. He noted the leading role played by Great Britain in including Hamas on the list, as well as the current British endorsement of adding Hizbullah to the terror list as well.
