The World Health Organization works in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MoH) in fulfilling the Ministry’s vision of providing Iraq with accessible, affordable, available, safe, and comprehensive quality health services. The seven main areas of work which encompass all WHO activities are: (1) Access to Quality Health Services; (2) Health Policy, Planning and Sustainable Development; (3) Human Resource Development; (4) Mother, Child and Reproductive Health; (5) Prevention and Control of Communicable Diseases; (6) Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases; and (7) Social Determinants of Health. This bulletin has used these seven areas of work (which are consistent with the Ministry’s strategy and the UN Health Cluster’s strategic outcomes) as a framework to present the activities undertaken in the reporting period. A group of Iraqi nurses had an exploratory visit to UAE from March 19th to March 26th, 2006.
The aim of this visit was to obtain information about:
- Federal Department of Nursing roles and responsibilities.
- Management of nursing/ midwifery services in UAE.
- Nursing/ Midwifery policies and standards of clinical practice.
- Formal education programs in UAE.
The group members achieved the aim of the visit and gathered the required information from the Federal Department of Nursing, various hospitals, health centres and academic nursing institutes. A report will be presented to the Minister of Health with a constructed plan concerning regulation of the nursing profession in Iraq.
From 18th to 23rd March, WHO supported the participation of two senior officials from the Iraq MOH in the bids opening, analysis and review related to the procurement of three oxygen plants which will be funded by the UNDG ITF project; Emergency Medical Oxygen Production and Supply for Iraq.
The two officials were then briefed in Cairo, from 25th to 27th March, on the principles and procedures of procurement and logistics used by WHO. The overall aim was to facilitate the official’s familiarisation with the bidding process and how it is applied and thereby promote their understanding of the regional and international procurement procedures and processes followed by the organisation.
