Operational Updates
General Food Assistance
• In May 2024, 3,080 internally displaced persons (IDPs) (792 households) received e-voucher food assistance at Jada’a 1 camp in Ninewa Governorate. WFP also provided multi-purpose cash assistance (MPCA) to 8,368 individuals (1,677 households) lacking civil documentation in Baghdad, Kirkuk, Ninawa, Wasit, Diyala, Anbar, Babil, and Salahuddin Governorates.
Economic Empowerment, Livelihoods and Climate Change
• In May, WFP completed the first phase of EnableHer, a project aiming to empower 100 women through financial education, provision of assets, grants, and long-term entrepreneurial mentorship in Erbil, Ninawa, and Duhok Governorates. The participants successfully completed the training and received toolkits to start their businesses. Additionally, 50 percent of the participants will receive a year-long business development mentorship from specialized business incubators to help them establish their businesses.
• Under the National Jousour (Bridges) programme, WFP conducted graduation ceremonies and job fairs in Missan, ThiQar, Basrah, and Mosul Governorates. Over 400 participants graduated from the programme, having received support in developing their digital, IT and soft skills and connections to job placement companies to facilitate their employment.
• A technical collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and WFP resulted in the implementation of E-Farming, an application aimed at centralizing farmer-related data and enhancing information dissemination and financial and market access for over 650,000 farmers across Iraq. The application was approved and deployed for testing by the MoA. Additionally, WFP supplied the necessary project equipment and intranet connection to facilitate a pilot launch in Kerbala Governorate.
• As part of the Smallholder Agricultural Revitalization Project (SARP) with MoA, WFP launched a Mini Grower intervention in Basra Governorate. This initiative provides vulnerable populations with training, skills development, and in-kind support to diversify income sources and revitalize local economies. WFP equipped 40 participants with mini-grower items to kick-start their own livelihood projects.
• WFP supported a workshop on “Making Cities Resilient with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the Ministry of Environment, ensuring the participation of 11 Government staff from Anbar, Mosul, and Diyala Governorates. The workshop aimed to develop a local resilience action plan and foster experience sharing among the participating cities.
• In May, WFP Iraq hosted the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) in a field mission in Sulaymaniyah Governorate to showcase the impact of the nature-based solution interventions developing a Food Security Monitoring System (FSMS) and analysis and upcoming publications on food prices and social protection programmes in Iraq.
• WFP conducted a workshop on data privacy for the National Data Centre (NDC) and additional two workshops on the Single Registry in the Federal and Kurdistan regions focused on data governance and management as well as the progress of the single registry processing and implementation timeline, with the presence of key governmental representatives.
• As part of its technical support for the Iraqi Household SocioEconomic Survey (IHSES-III) under the Social Protection framework, WFP provided a capacity strengthening session for 16 participants from statistics entities in KRI as well as WFP staff. The training aimed to enhance their skills in applying food security indicator calculations to the IHSES-III datasets.
• As part of the Graduation Pathways initiative, to enable the transition of Social Safety Net (SSN) beneficiaries from government assistance to self-reliance and economic empowerment, WFP signed a Letter of Agreement (LoA) with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA) and planned to deliver entrepreneurship training to MoLSA staff in July.
