URGENT NEEDS
Of the USD 458.3 million shortfall in UNHCR’s total 2017 requirements for the Iraq situation, UNHCR urgently requires USD 126 million to meet the most critical needs of vulnerable men, women, girls and boys displaced from Mosul.
This includes USD 60 million to assist more than 100,000 IDP families with tailored protection support, tented shelter in camps, and basic household core relief items such as cooking stoves, mattresses and solar lamps. Critical protection interventions include identification of persons at risk, provision of psychosocial support, child protection, and prevention and response to Sexual and Gender Based Violence, as well as provision of legal advice and support in obtaining documents,
Returns are happening in parallel to new displacement. UNHCR needs USD 24 million to support returnees with basic household items, cash assistance and shelter assistance. In areas of return, UNHCR and partners are providing protection services and Quick Impact Projects that provide services and promote peaceful co-existence. UNHCR is actively engaged to ensure that returnees have a free and informed choice to return.
USD 42 million is also needed now for procurement for the next winter season. UNHCR aims to assist 135,000 IDP and returnee families with winter items including blankets, kerosene jerry cans and heating stoves. UNHCR will also provide one-time cash assistance of USD 150 per family for 100,000 IDP and returnee families to help them get through the winter season.
OVERVIEW OF CURRENT SITUATION
Since the Mosul military operation began on 17 October 2016, over 500,000 people have been displaced. Of these, almost 125,000 people have returned to their places of origin. There are nearly 380,000 people currently displaced, including 316,000 in camps and emergency sites and 53,000 in private settings in host communities.
There is considerable concern that an additional 200,000 people could be displaced from Mosul in the next few weeks, as the last neighbourhoods under the control of extremist groups are retaken by Iraqi forces.
Meanwhile, over 17,000 Iraqis have been received in Al Hol camp in north-east Syria, where UNHCR is providing them with protection and assistance, since the Mosul campaign began.
