This is the first quantitative study to assess the needs of climate-induced migrants in all known locations of displacement in Iraq, based on data collected through IOM's Climate-Induced Displacement Tracking.
Key Findings:
- Over 168,000 individuals remain displaced due to climate and environmental factors, primarily from Thi-Qar, Missan and Al-Diwaniya.
- Employment, housing and access to services emerged as the top needs across locations.
- Many climate-induced migrants rely on irregular housing arrangements and lack permission to reside on the land.
- Challenges affording food and basic non-food items remain a major concern in areas such as Al Basrah, Baghdad and Diyala.
- Intentions to return are low: In only 10 per cent of assessed locations did key informants report that most migrants intend to return. In the majority of locations, migrants prefer to stay or remain undecided. These findings are based on location-level interviews with key informants.
