UN envoy welcomes meeting of Iraqi political leaders

Baghdad, 2 June 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, welcomed yesterday’s meeting of Iraqi political leaders at the initiative of Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council (SIIC) leader, Sayed Ammar al-Hakim, attended by Vice-President Khoda'yir al-Khuza'e, Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki, Parliament Speaker Usama Al-Nujeifi, as well as several political, parliamentary and religious personalities.

“Engaging in a candid and constructive dialogue among all Iraqi leaders is the only way to pull Iraq out of the current political crisis,” Mr. Kobler said. “It is essential to keep the positive momentum of this reconciliation initiative."

"The UN has repeatedly called for and encouraged dialogue," the UN envoy added, expressing hope that yesterday’s meeting will lead to decisive and steadfast action to end political differences in the interest of Iraq and the Iraqi people.
