Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq Martin Kobler Meets with the Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Usama al-Nujaifi

Baghdad, 8 January 2012 - In continuation of his ongoing efforts to address current political tensions, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Martin Kobler, met today in Baghdad the Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Mr. Usama al-Nujaifi.

The SRSG discussed in this meeting the latest political developments in Iraq. He stressed the importance of political leaders resolving their differences through inclusive dialogue.

SRSG Kobler expressed his support for the proposed national conference as a way to find common ground in the spirit of partnership based on the Iraqi Constitution, which recognizes the independence of the judiciary and the separation of powers.

Mr. Kobler in particular emphasized the important role the Council of Representatives plays in promoting democracy in Iraq. He assured Speaker Usama al-Nujaifi of the readiness of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) to support Iraq’s efforts to promote confidence and trust among the parties at this critical moment.
