Overview

In February 2015, the local authorities informed mukhtars and mayors of the areas that had received large numbers of IDPs that the families could return to their places of origin, upon security authorities’ scrutiny of the areas and security/safety guarantees. So far, estimated 15,442 families (originally from Diyala) have returned to Khanaqin, Khalis, and Muqdadiya districts. The return have been ongoing, despite security and protection concerns that might significantly affect the returnees’ freedom of movement and access to other rights.
