OIC Secretary General Condemns Baghdad Bombings

The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks which targeted Baghdad and Nasiriyah on Thursday 5 January 2012, claiming the lives of many innocent victims and leaving scores wounded.

The Secretary General conveyed his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and his wishes for speedy recovery to the wounded, expressing his concern over the deterioration of security and political conditions in Iraq.

The Secretary General urged the different components of the Iraqi people and the political powers in Iraq to preserve the country’s unity, to counter terrorist acts aimed at causing discord among Iraqi factions, and to give precedence to Iraq’s national interests. He also insisted on the importance of and need to adhere to the stipulations of the OIC-sponsored Makkah Document of 2006 to reject violence and extremism. The Secretary General stated that the OIC endeavors, in cooperation with the Iraqi Government, to prepare a second expanded meeting to activate the Makkah Document.
