OIC calls on Iraqis to overcome the polarization and to enlist in the political process to build a new Iraq

Jeddah: 26 October 2005 - After the Iraq Independent Electoral Commission announced the approval of the draft Constitution which was submitted for a referendum on 15th October, the Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, expressed his hope that the adoption of the Constitution would lead to opening a new page in the history of Iraq that would give a boost to democracy and wise governance, and expedite the emergence of the state institutions as well as the entrenchment of the principle of supremacy of law, so that the Iraqi people may enjoy security and stability and start erecting a secure and coherent society that would safeguard the interest of all Iraqis without exception.

The Secretary General called on all the segments of the Iraqi people to transcend the severe polarization that prevailed before the referendum, to banish violence and to allow everyone to contribute to the completion of the peace process and to establish a democratic government encompassing all concerned parties. The Secretary General reiterated the full readiness of the Organization of the Islamic Conference to extend its support to the Iraqi people to ensure the success of the ongoing political process and the building of a future that would meet the Iraqi people's legitimate aspiration to unity, development, equality and sovereignty.
