Ramadi, Anbar – 27 November 2024 - Officials from the Anbar Governorate, KfW Development Bank and UNOPS came together to mark the completion of the first phase of the "Local Infrastructure in Rural Anbar" (LIRA) project in Ramadi.

The first phase of the LIRA project, funded by the German Cooperation (BMZ) through the KfW Development Bank and implemented by UNOPS, has contributed to improving access to basic public services and enhancing living standards for over 259,000 people in the conflict-affected governorates of Anbar. The project rehabilitated 1000 war-damaged shelters, 10 water stations and 3km of road rehabilitation as well as installed 600 solar street lights in 10 km of road. Additionally, 60 civil servants, authorities’ representatives, and NGO staff participated in environmental and sustainability awareness sessions while 40 community members received capacity building training on maintenance.

The KfW country manager - Iraq Marc-André Hensel said: "I'm very pleased with the implementation of this important project and grateful for the productive coordination between the governor's office of Anbar and UNOPS in ensuring quality implementation and close coordination with the affected communities. We hope this project provides vital support for returning IDP’s as well as for all inhabitants of the participating communities.”

The Anbar Governor representative Eng. Ibrahim Madlool said: ” For IDPs and returnees, this project has been a lifeline, providing them with the opportunity to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into their communities. Returning home is not just about physical shelter; it is a symbol of dignity, stability, and a foundation for a better future.” Adding, “the economic impact of the project has been significant. By creating income-generating opportunities during the rehabilitation work, the project has provided livelihoods for workers and their families in rural and deprived areas.”

Mr. Anil Chandrika, UNOPS Iraq Country Manager, said: “These comprehensive interventions have not only played a vital role in rebuilding the community but have also empowered its members, enabling them to become more resilient. This resilience allows individuals and families to better support themselves and their neighbours, fostering a stronger sense of community”.

These achievements underscore the importance of collaborative efforts in rebuilding and revitalizing communities in post-conflict areas. The LIRA project will continue to address critical infrastructure needs through its ongoing phases, further contributing to the development and the repopulation of the area.
