Iraq: Statement by Minister for Foreign Affairs Laila Freivalds following the mortar attack in Baghdad

"I am deeply dismayed by the news of today's terrible events at the bridge in Baghdad. This is a dreadful tragedy for all the families affected."

"The violence in Iraq must end. This is essential if democracy is to gain a foothold. An end to the violence is also vital to allow the people of Iraq, who have suffered so much, to live in the freedom to which they are all entitled. The entire international community must contribute to the process of democracy in Iraq."

"I call on all Iraqis to continue to support the establishment of democracy and strongly condemn those who continue to use violence and terror as a means to political ends."
