- Return movement to newly accessible areas around Mosul are picking up, while new displacement continues. IOM-DTM Emergency Tracking reports that 165 families (990 individuals) have returned to their areas of origin on 10 December, east and south of Mosul, from Iraqi government camps Khazer M1 and Qayyarah Jad’ah. On 10 December, the Ministry of Migration and Displacement (MoMD) also announced that returns have started to Namroud, Hammam Al-Alil and Qayyarah areas south of Mosul, stating that it expects hundreds of returns in the coming weeks.
- Over 7,000 individuals have arrived to IOM Al Qayyarah Airstrip since the opening of the site on 7 December, most families are from Hatra district, south of Mosul. The Iraqi government camp Khazer M2 has also received a continuous flow of new arrivals: some 3,000 persons, all from inside Mosul city, have arrived over the past week. All new arrivals received food, water and core relief items such as mattresses, blankets and a kitchen set. Health and other services are available in both locations.
UNHCR Response Update
- UNHCR’s protection partner is present daily in UNHCR-supported camps. Vulnerable individuals are identified on a daily basis and referred to relevant humanitarian partners for assistance. Individuals referred for assistance include, among other cases, unaccompanied minors, urgent medical cases, disabled or elderly persons in need of assistance.
- UNHCR partner conducted further assessments in newly accessible areas around Shura, south of Mosul. All three villages accessed during the mission have already started to receive returnees. UNHCR has distributed over 45,000 quilts and blankets in newly accessible areas both in Shura and in villages on the eastern outskirts of Mosul city, to help families cope with the cold weather.
- UNHCR is advocating with authorities to put in place mechanisms for redocumentation of displaced individuals. This includes addressing issues of absence of documents as well as lost, or non-recognized identification documents. In parallel, UNHCR is also exploring with the Government possibilities for mobile legal teams to be deployed in camps.
