Iraq - Sandstorm (DG ECHO, Media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 6 May 2025)

  • On 5 May, a severe sandstorm swept across Iraq, causing widespread respiratory issues. Nearly 550 people have been hospitalised following the storm. Authorities urged residents to remain indoors and take precautionary measures.
  • Iraq is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change worldwide.
  • According to Iraqi authorities, Iraq has experienced an average of 272 dusty days per year over the past twenty years. Dust storms are a recurring phenomenon, but their frequency and severity have increased due to prolonged drought, desertification, and rising temperatures. It is projected that by 2050 Iraq will have up to 300 dusty days annually.
  • DG ECHO invested over EUR 3 million in disaster preparedness in 2024.
