Erbil, Iraq – 19 April 2025 - The Iraqi Ministry of Environment, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), convened a three-day meeting of the Steering Committee for the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) project in Erbil. The meeting brought together key government stakeholders, technical experts, and representatives from relevant institutions.

Sessions included reviews of technical and financial progress, discussions of the three adaptation protocol reports, analysis of Iraq’s Climate Vulnerability Index (CVI), and examination of the adaptation options available in the country. The integration of climate adaptation concepts into school and university curricula was also highlighted.

Participants emphasized the importance of aligning the NAP document with the ongoing update of Iraq’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to ensure they are jointly announced at COP30. They also discussed financial planning, preparation of the final NAP report in Arabic and English, and the incorporation of the grant into Iraq’s 2025 national budget.

Key recommendations focused on strengthening coordination, sustaining institutional and financial support, and developing a coherent local implementation strategy for the post-2025 period.
